Iced or hot, dark or blonde, there are many ways to consume coffee. However, there is also a sustainability element that can be considered when choosing a coffee brand.

The way coffee beans are grown affects how sustainable they are. Sustainable growth practices include better crop and water management, pheromone boxes instead of pesticides, composting waste to be reused as fertilizer, and using coffee hulls instead of cutting down eucalyptus trees. These methods are better for the environment and therefore better for you and your cup of coffee.

Figuring out which brands do this at the supermarket can be time-consuming and frustrating. To help you begin, here are four brands using sustainable practices and where you can buy them.

Kicking Horse Coffee is Fair Trade certified and organically grown. Fair Trade means better trading conditions and empowerment for farmers, as well as the promotion of practices, tools and training for farmers to have a more sustainable business.

When coffee beans are organically grown, it means it is pure and pesticide free. The farms are also tested at random by independent auditors for pesticide and herbicide residuals, ensuring the coffee beans are up to standard.

Currently, Kick Horse Coffee is available at local stores in Fullerton such as Target, Sprouts Farmers Market, Ralphs, Mother’s Market and Bristol Farms Market.

Larry’s Coffee is also Fair Trade certified and organically grown, as well as shade-grown, meaning the beans are grown in their natural setting. They also make k-cups, which are single serve coffee pods, that are recyclable and BPA-free. The most sustainable way to consume coffee with a machine is to use a reusable k-cup.

The company is also one of the founders of Cooperative Coffee, an organization of independent coffee roasters that import coffee directly from farmers for a genuine and fair partnership.

Larry’s Coffee is available at Sprouts Farmers Market in Tustin, but it can also be purchased on Amazon.

This coffee brand is Fair Trade certified, organic and roasted in a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard energy-efficient factory. Each bag comes with a unique QR code customers can scan to see exactly where those beans were grown, or roasted and how the company’s director scores them.

Ethical Bean only buys wet processed coffee, which means the beans have been grown in natural shade canopies and no harmful or synthetic fertilizers were used in the growing process. They have also partnered with Bullfrog Power to buy renewable energy for their vehicles and roastery.

This coffee can be purchased directly through the Ethical Bean website, as well as at Target, Ralphs and Amazon.

Based out of Portland, Oregon, this brand is Fair Trade certified, organic and a part of the Rainforest Alliance. However, they are not bird friendly or carbon neutral.

This brand of coffee is the first Certified B Corporation roaster in Oregon, which is a certification for social and environmental impact. This means they use their resources for the benefit of the community, as well as the environment, and they have high standards for accountability and transparency as well as environmental performance standards, according to B Corporation.

Nossa Familia coffee can be purchased on their website and on Amazon.

The coffee beans Joshua Tree Coffee uses are Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade certified and organic. These beans are hand roasted in small batches and arguably given a unique taste due to their location in the high desert region of California.

Joshua Tree Coffee can be purchased through their website.
